Academics
We are a student-centered community of life-long learners, collaborators & innovators. We believe in the integration of the Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM) Model to engage students in experiential & hands-on learning opportunities that prepare students to dream bigger and achieve greater in their person, college and/or career aspirations. We provide STEAM education to our students PreK – 12th grade. High Schoolers can participate in our Early College High School program and potentially graduate High School with one or more associate degree(s). Currently we are planning a number of Career and job skills CTE course offerings designed to teach job readiness, industry accepted certifications and entrepreneurship. STEAM Model & Individualized Learning Plans (ILP)
The STEAM Model is built upon five core content areas of Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts & Math. The integration of these standard content areas provides a comprehensive and experiential learning model where hands-on learning opportunities are combined with creative exploration and innovation. This comprehensive and holistic approach combined with SODA’s small class sizes creates a unique and individualized learning experience that focuses on the whole student. STEAM Education prepares learners that are innovators, designers and creative problem solvers to help navigate complex global issues. When applied to learning the STEAM principles allow for deeper understanding, courageous innovation and creative & critical thinking.
Individual Learning Plan (ILP) is a digital portfolio designed to track student progress and continue driving student outcome goals. This student-centered approach seeks to understand the unique makeup of each individual student and work as a team to create the supportive environment and plan needed to ensure individual student success. The ILP team consists of the student, advisor, counselor and parent/guardian. The ILP seeks to build on a student’s current level of learning by tracking current student data and planning for future learning and career goals. ILPs track data such as, student learning styles, skills, strengths and hobbies, as well as, grades, assessment scores, career goals and student self-assessments through the years.
All students, at SODA, are required to develop and maintain an individualized Learning Plan (ILP) that will act as the student's roadmap to success.
· Elementary student ILPs will be a folder portfolio and will include formal testing results, short cycle assessment results, parent questionnaire/survey, STEAM project information, and student work samples.
· Secondary student ILPs will align with Next Step Plans and may be electronic or a portfolio, including formal testing results, short cycle assessment results, career inventory survey, College entrance testing results (such as Accuplacer, PSAT, ASVAB, ACT), documentation of service-learning projects, and a STEAM portfolio including participation in competitions, contests, and performances while attending SODA.
Early College High School (ECHS):
School of Dreams Academy is one of only 22 New Mexico Approved Early College High Schools. A new study found that students who participated in EARLY COLLEGE were more likely to graduate high school and enroll in college within six years of high school graduation. Thus, postsecondary success IS the primary reason SODA offers the opportunity for students to take dual credit classes. This is both a great way to jumpstart one’s education and to accelerate through high school in a life changing meaningful way. Through our Early College High School program tuition and books are free while in high school, which is a tremendous cost savings.
