FROM THE PRINCIPAL
School of Dreams Academy (SODA) is a New Mexico State Authorized Charter School located in Los Lunas, NM. SODA was the inspiration of Avilo (Lefty) Otero & Edna Otero. Teresa Ogas’s parents envisioned and dreamed of a school with a different approach that would help students stay in school while providing them opportunities for a successful future. He wanted a school that would meet the needs of all children while providing them an opportunity to realize their dreams. Mr. Otero challenged his daughter, Teresa, her husband Michael, and Kathy Chavez, who was with YDI Valencia, to create a charter school in Valencia County. The school became a reality in August of 2009 with about 55 students, and now has an enrollment of approximately 600 students in grades PreK - 12th.
School of Dreams Academy is one of the few, if not the ONLY, multifaceted charter schools in New Mexico. Utilizing a S.T.E.A.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math) educational model SODA offers outstanding programs in the Arts, Robotics, Agriculture, Literature, Performing Arts, and Science which complement an already rigorous academic environment taught by many highly qualified instructors.
Upcoming construction goals include plans for a high-tech computer learning center, as well as a manufacturing and vocational training center. The school serves students Pre-k through 12th grade and is the only Early College High School in Valencia County where students have the opportunity to graduate high school with an associate degree.
At the School of Dreams Academy, our goal is to fulfill and honor Mr. Otero’s dream by graduating students who are on their way to becoming strong, productive citizens by being college or workforce ready.
